Why I enjoyed writing alien/scifi stories - romance or adventures - is because I can imagine the whole world. There are no rules, except survival.

Like for example, my Bride for the Alien series.

A totally new galaxy where five scientists are taken. They don’t know where they are going, or why.

This is not just romance; the taken humans have to solve ancient trials, old compatibility rules, and also identify who the villain behind the scenes is.

I added a map of the galaxy drawn by one of the people taken from the Mars colony. It’s not accurate in its dimensions. That’s on purpose, because the humans don’t know how far each planet or station is from each other. They only know that they are far, far away from home.

There Are No Limits Among the Stars

One of the greatest joys of writing science fiction is that there are almost no boundaries.

If I want to create a city-like space station, free for every species, I can.

If I imagine engine parts that can communicate by touch and distance, I can make them real.

If a planet has three moons, violet skies, and seasons that last for years instead of months, no one can tell me I’m wrong.

Every world begins with a single question:

“What if?”

What if gravity worked differently?

What if tunes were how the stations or checkpoints communicated with each other?

What if an entire civilization was hidden underground, and never visited the surface? This is actually what I had in the Araff story. There is a reason why they are there.

Those questions lead to places I’d never discover in any other genre.

Creating the Ariss Universe

When I began creating the Ariss universe, I didn’t just want another planet with blue-skinned aliens. I wanted a civilization that felt ancient. One with its own history. Its own traditions, and its own disasters.

The cultures in the Ariss stories aren’t simply humans wearing different costumes. Their beliefs influence how they raise children, how they choose leaders, how they celebrate, how they mourn, and even how they fall in love.

Sometimes the greatest obstacle isn’t distance. It’s understanding each other.

One of my favorite parts of alien romance is watching two people slowly realize that everything they assumed about love may be wrong.

Instead of falling in love because the plot demands it, the characters learn to understand each other’s worlds one conversation at a time.

The heroes aren’t simply visiting another planet—they’re stepping into a living world that existed long before they arrived.

Science Fiction Gives Romance Room to Grow

At its heart, every romance asks the same question:

Can two people overcome the obstacles between them?

Science fiction simply allows those obstacles to become much bigger.

• Different planets.

• Different species.

• Different languages.

• Different histories.

• Different ways of seeing the universe.

Yet despite all those differences, the emotional journey remains familiar.

• Trust.

• Friendship.

• Sacrifice.

• Hope.

• Love.

Those emotions are universal, whether the couple is dancing in a nineteenth-century ballroom or watching three suns set beyond an alien sea.

Why Readers Matter

One of the most rewarding parts of writing these stories is hearing what readers notice.

Sometimes it’s a creature they wish they could meet.

Sometimes it’s an alien tradition that feels surprisingly meaningful.

Sometimes it’s a city, a planet, or a quiet moment beneath unfamiliar stars that stays with them long after they’ve finished the book.

That tells me the world has become real—not just to me, but to someone else.

And that’s one of the greatest gifts a writer can receive.

Looking Toward the Next Horizon

Every new Ariss novel begins with a blank page.

A new world waiting to be explored.

A culture waiting to be discovered.

A mystery hidden beneath distant skies.

And, of course, two people whose lives are about to change forever.

That’s why I keep returning to science fiction romance.

Not because it’s about aliens.

Because it’s about possibility.

Every new planet reminds us that the universe is far bigger than we imagine.

And every love story reminds us that, no matter where we come from, the desire to connect with another heart might just be the most universal language of all.

People who solve impossible problems one careful step at a time.

Technology Changes People

Hard science fiction isn’t really about futuristic gadgets.

It’s about the people who use them.

How would society change if fusion power became practical?

What happens when mining expands into the asteroid belt?

How do families stay connected when messages between planets take minutes—or even hours—to arrive?

Technology doesn’t exist in isolation.

Every invention changes how people live, work, communicate, and dream.

Those human consequences are often far more interesting than the invention itself.If you’re searching for your next great read, this weekend is the perfect opportunity.

One of my favorite things about romance readers is how wonderfully diverse their tastes are.

Some readers want witty banter that makes them laugh out loud.

Others want aching slow-burn tension where two characters circle each other for hundreds of pages before finally admitting their feelings.

Some love historical ballrooms filled with glittering gowns and whispered scandals.

Others prefer modern cities, paranormal forests, cozy villages, dangerous spies, billionaires, cowboys, or mafia families.

The setting changes.

The characters change.

The tropes change.

Tropes We Never Get Tired Of

If you’ve spent any time in the romance community, you’ve probably noticed that readers don’t avoid familiar tropes—they actively seek them out.

• Friends to lovers.

• Enemies to lovers.

• Fake dating.

• Forced proximity.

• Only one bed.

• Grumpy and sunshine.

• Second chances.

• Marriage of convenience.

• Beauty and the Beast.

• Forbidden love.

• Secret identities.

There is a reason these stories continue to thrive.

They’re emotional shortcuts that let us dive directly into the feelings we love most. The excitement comes from discovering how this particular author will make those familiar ingredients feel brand new.

Books That Stay With Us

The romances we remember aren’t always the ones with the biggest twists.

They’re the ones that make us feel something.

The quiet hand-holding scene.

The apology that finally comes.

The dance.

The first kiss.

The sacrifice.

The moment one character realizes they would rather lose everything than lose the person they love.

Years later, we may not remember every detail of the plot, but we remember exactly how those moments made us feel.

That is the real magic of romance fiction.

My Current Writing

Lately I’ve been reaching for stories that combine romance with a little extra adventure: romantic suspense, sci-fi adventure with romance. This one, Ariss, starts in the Mars Colony, where 5 scientists are taken away.

The scientists don’t know why, but they soon realize they’re entering an ancient system for choosing partners. It’s not just a physical test, but also a complementary test: who will be your match?

I love historical romances where danger lurks behind elegant society.

Fantasy romances filled with curses, forgotten kingdoms, magical creatures, and unlikely heroes, like in The Crown and The Collar, where the five kingdoms are threatened by the evil wizard. A princess was taken away and hidden. This book also tells the readers how kindness is more powerful than magic.

Paranormal romances where ancient creatures discover that love is more powerful than centuries of loneliness like in the Krampus story. This time Krampus is not the evil one, but the village’s protector.

Books can be escapes, but they’re also companions.

Sometimes we simply want two fictional people to find happiness because it reminds us that happiness is still possible.

A Few Recommendations

If you’re looking for your next romance read, here are a few directions depending on your mood:

For historical romance: Try stories filled with dukes, scandals, masquerade balls, and slow-burning attraction.

For paranormal romance: Dragons, wolves, vampires, witches, and magical soulmates offer endless possibilities.

A Bride for the Alien series

There are science fiction stories about wars.

There are stories about empires.

And then there are stories about two people who were born on different worlds, carrying histories neither of them asked for.

That’s what this series became.

When I started writing Ariss, I thought I was writing an alien romance.

Instead, I found myself writing about loneliness.

About what it means to meet someone who sees you before they understand you.

About two civilizations that have spent centuries believing they know exactly who the other side is... only to discover they’ve been wrong all along.

Character Page: Ariss

Ariss was always the beginning.

The first contact wasn’t made by diplomats.

It wasn’t made by soldiers.

It happened between two people who should never have trusted each other.

One human.

One alien.

Both carrying far more responsibility than either wanted.

Their story asks a simple question:

Can love exist before trust does?

Sometimes the answer is yes.

Sometimes that answer changes entire civilizations.

What’s next.

Character Spotlight: Araff

If Ariss could lead, Araff could read machines.

He wasn’t born into a noble house or trained to command fleets from polished council chambers. He grew up where ships were built—among welding sparks, coolant lines, engine housings, and decks that always smelled faintly of hot metal. His hands carry the story of that life. Scarred knuckles. Burn marks that never quite faded. Tiny white lines earned from years of repairing engines no one else could save.

To most people, a spacecraft is a masterpiece of engineering.

To Araff, it’s alive.

He doesn’t simply know the schematics. He feels when an engine isn’t happy, hears the difference between a healthy reactor and one beginning to drift out of harmony, and notices a vibration so slight that most sensors would ignore it. Give him enough time beside a machine, and he’ll tell you what it needs before it fails.

He has never believed technology should be conquered.

It should be understood.

Other engineers calculate first.

Araff listens.

He’ll rest a scarred hand against a bulkhead, close his eyes, and somehow know which conduit is carrying too much heat or which magnetic bearing is beginning to wear. His crew jokes that the ship talks to him.

Sometimes they aren’t entirely joking.

Away from the engine rooms, Araff is quieter than most expect. He doesn’t chase recognition, doesn’t seek command, and has little patience for politics. Titles impress him less than honest work. A person who keeps their promises earns his respect far faster than someone born into privilege.

Perhaps that’s why he and Alissa understand one another so quickly.

She sees the scars before she notices the brilliance.

He notices her curiosity before her fear.

Neither is interested in appearances.

Both want to know how things truly work.

Including each other.

Behind the Story

One of my favorite parts of writing this series has been building the alien civilizations.

It’s not just about different technology. It’s about different ways of thinking, unique traditions, varied ideas of family and honor, and different ways of falling in love.

I wanted the romance to feel as though it could only happen because these characters come from completely different worlds, and yet discover that some emotions don’t belong to any one species. The feelings that are universal:

• Hope.

• Grief.

• Curiosity.

• Love.

Araff is not yet published, but will be soon. All the books in the series are standalone, different romances, different heat levels, and different challenges.

And after that will be Aronn: Pilot.

Excerpts from Gianna’s Journal

Day 3

I finally convinced myself this isn’t a dream.

If it were a dream, I’d have woken up by now.

Dreams don’t smell like this place.

Everything here carries the scent of rain after lightning. The air is cool but never cold, and every corridor hums softly, as though the ship itself is breathing.

I still can’t decide if that’s comforting or terrifying.

The crew watches me when they think I don’t notice.

Not in a cruel way.

More like...

...like they’ve found a bird that’s somehow wandered into the ocean.

They aren’t afraid of me.

They’re curious.

I suppose I’m doing exactly the same thing.

Day 5

Today I learned they don’t actually “eat” meals together.

Nutrition is mostly individual. Efficient.

No conversations around tables.

No arguing over who stole the last dessert.

No family recipes.

No birthday cakes.

No Thanksgiving.

When I explained what Thanksgiving was, one officer asked whether humanity held annual diplomatic ceremonies with birds.

I laughed so hard I nearly cried.

Then I realized I actually missed my family.

I hadn’t let myself think about them.

Not until today.

Day 6

Ariss came to check on me.

Or at least I think he did.

He insists he was “passing through.”

Which is remarkable considering his route apparently passes my quarters every single evening.

He asked whether I required additional environmental adjustments.

I asked if the ship could make pizza.

He looked genuinely concerned.

“I’m unfamiliar with this nutritional compound.”

I spent fifteen minutes explaining pizza.

He listened with the seriousness of someone being briefed on an interstellar treaty.

When I finished, he simply nodded.

“It appears your species survives primarily through melted dairy.”

I laughed.

He didn’t.

I’m still not entirely sure whether that was a joke.

Day 8

I finally asked why everyone keeps staring at my hands.

Apparently humans gesture far more than they do.

To them, my conversations look almost theatrical.

One engineer admitted he’d been trying to determine whether I was constantly issuing secret tactical signals.

I told him I was Italian.

He looked even more confused.

Day 10

I saw Ariss smile today.

Actually smile.

Not the polite little expression he gives during formal conversations.

A real one.

It lasted maybe two seconds.

His entire face changed.

It’s strange.

His people seem so controlled that when one of them laughs, it feels like watching sunrise after weeks of rain.

I wish he smiled more often.

Day 12

Today he asked about music.

Not because he enjoys it.

Because he couldn’t understand why humans would willingly listen to the same sounds repeatedly.

I had taken my laptop with me, and I had a collection of music and popular songs stored there.

So...

I played him Debussy.

Then Queen.

Then Einaudi.

Then Elvis.

That might have been a mistake.

He sat perfectly still through all of it.

Finally he asked,

“Is emotional instability considered a requirement for artistic excellence on Earth?”

Honestly?

Maybe.

Day 14

I’ve started noticing little things.

He always walks on the outside when we’re in unfamiliar sections of the ship.

He slows his pace without realizing it.

He remembers everything I’ve mentioned.

Everything.

I casually told him coffee helps me think.

The next morning there was a mug waiting outside my door.

Not coffee.

They don’t have coffee.

Something...similar.

Apparently half the science division spent the night trying to replicate caffeine.

It tasted terrible.

I drank every drop.

Day 17

The stars look different here.

I knew they would.

Of course I knew.

But knowing something and seeing it...

Those are different things.

I spent almost an hour looking out one of the observation windows.

I couldn’t find Orion.

Or Cassiopeia.

Or the North Star.

The sky I’d known my whole life simply...

wasn’t there.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt so far from home.

I didn’t realize Ariss had been standing beside me until I heard his voice in my head, asking, “Which stars are missing?”

I pointed.

One by one.

He listened.

Not because he knew the constellations.

Because he knew they mattered.

Day 19

I’m beginning to think he worries about me more than he admits.

Today I tripped over one of those ridiculous floor seams.

He caught my arm before I hit the deck.

His reflexes are unfair.

He immediately let go, as though he’d done something inappropriate.

Then apologized.

Twice.

For preventing me from falling.

Aliens are weird.

Day 22

I asked him today if his people ever fall in love.

The question seemed to surprise him.

He thought about it for a very long time.

Finally he answered, “Not quickly.”

I asked what that meant.

He said, “Our hearts decide before our minds are willing to admit it.”

I haven’t stopped thinking about that sentence.

Neither, I suspect, has he.

Day 25

Something is changing.

Not the ship.

Not the mission.

Us.

The silences aren’t awkward anymore.

Sometimes we simply stand together looking through the observation windows without speaking.

Sometimes that’s enough.

Home still feels impossibly far away.

But somehow...

I don’t feel quite as alone as I did three weeks ago.

Maybe that’s what friendship looks like when it begins among the stars.

Or maybe—

No.

It’s far too early to finish that thought.

I have a confession.

I don’t have a romance “type.”

Some readers only want billionaires.

Some only want historical romance.

Some only want paranormal romance.

Meanwhile, I will happily read about a brooding duke, an immortal sea guardian, a cursed wolf prince, or, apparently, a man who can turn into a chicken.

At this point, I have accepted that my taste in romance heroes is less a preference and more a complete lack of standards.

But the more I think about it, the more I realize romance readers aren’t actually falling in love with specific kinds of heroes.

We’re falling in love with possibilities.

The duke represents a world of grand balls, impossible etiquette, and stolen glances across candlelit rooms.

The paranormal hero offers something different. He’s dangerous, powerful, and often carries centuries of baggage that would require several therapists and at least one exorcist to unpack.

Then there are the truly unusual heroes.

The ones who make readers stop and ask, “Wait... this works far better than it should.”

Those stories remind us that romance isn’t about perfection.

It’s about connection.

The moment two characters find the one person who understands them.

That’s true whether the setting is Regency London, a haunted castle, a magical forest, or a small town where shape-shifting chickens somehow become involved in everyone’s problems.

As a writer, I love exploring all those corners of romance.

Some of my stories lean into historical adventure and sweeping emotion.

Some dive headfirst into paranormal worlds filled with magic, curses, and creatures that definitely should not be attractive but somehow are.

And some are ridiculous fun.

Because sometimes readers want heartbreak.

And sometimes readers want a chicken shifter.

Both are perfectly valid life choices.

They don’t fight there; they go to meet, greet, and talk… or to find someone like Alessandra.

What happens in High School, when you are a strange girl, the weird one who… boks?

This is a trilogy box now. The stories that look for your identity, your fractures, and how you can break. This has only subtle romance, but mostly fantasy. I wanted to write this for the reason that humans thought in the past that the gods decided our fates and could change them, but what if it wasn’t the gods, but a court of demons?

Then I also started a new fantasy series with princes and princesses, trolls, wolf shifters, and evil witches. I wanted to have some Scandinavian folklore characters in these stories. These are novella-length stories involving several kingdoms.

This post has two parts. First, about marketing challenges of an indie author. And the second part is to introduce a new series.

One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned as an indie author is that writing a good book isn’t enough. You also have to make sure the right readers find it.

Recently, I began looking closely at some of the lower-rated reviews for my Court of Monsters trilogy. A pattern emerged that surprised me. The criticism wasn’t necessarily about the writing or the story—it was about expectations.

My blurbs described the books as “dark romantasy.” The covers hinted at an intimate relationship between a demon and a woman. Keywords leaned toward romance. Yet the books themselves are something quite different.

The romance is subtle. There are no explicit sex scenes. Relationships exist, but they are not the driving force of the narrative.

Instead, Court of Monsters is a story about transformation.

Each novel follows a different woman whose carefully constructed identity begins to fracture after entering an ancient Court that sees through every mask. The Court doesn’t reward or punish. It reveals. Each protagonist is forced to confront truths about herself that cannot be ignored, and each leaves the experience fundamentally changed.

When readers expect a romance-centered story, and instead find psychological fantasy and character metamorphosis, disappointment is understandable. They didn’t buy the wrong book because they made a mistake; they bought the book I accidentally marketed to them.

That realization has changed how I think about book descriptions, categories, and keywords.

Rather than emphasizing romance, I’m repositioning the series as what it has always been:

A dark fantasy trilogy.

A story of fractured identity and personal transformation.

Three women confronting ancient powers and themselves.

Subtle romantic undertones, but no explicit sexual content.

A psychological journey wrapped in fantasy.

Marketing isn’t about convincing everyone to read your book. It’s about helping the right readers recognize that it’s the book they’ve been looking for.

Ironically, clearer positioning may mean fewer clicks, but better reviews, happier readers, and a healthier long-term audience.

Sometimes the biggest change is rewriting how you describe it.

Introducing My New Fantasy Series: Oathbound Kingdoms

For the past several months, I’ve been building a new fantasy world that has slowly grown far beyond a single novel. What began as one story has become an interconnected series of seven books, each exploring a different kingdom, its people, and the ancient forces that threaten them.

Rather than retelling familiar fairy tales, the series draws on the creatures, myths, and traditions that have fascinated me for years—trolls hidden within mountain kingdoms, shape-shifters bound by ancient oaths, witches whose magic carries a heavy price, ravens that remember forgotten histories, spirits, curses, and old bargains that refuse to die.

These stories aren’t isolated adventures. They all take place within the same world.

Each book focuses on a different kingdom and a different cast of characters, allowing readers to experience the world from multiple perspectives. One kingdom may be struggling against monsters from the forests while another faces political intrigue, ancient curses, or enemies that have been quietly gathering strength for generations.

Although every novel tells a complete story, they are connected through the larger history of the world. Characters cross paths. Events in one kingdom create consequences for another. Alliances are formed, broken, and reforged. By the final book, the choices made throughout the series converge into a larger conflict that affects every realm.

One of the aspects I’m enjoying most is giving each kingdom its own identity. Their rulers, traditions, landscapes, and folklore differ, reflecting the diversity found throughout Scandinavian legends. Some kingdoms are carved into mountains where trolls have ruled for centuries. Others are surrounded by ancient forests where shapeshifters guard old secrets. Elsewhere, witches preserve dangerous knowledge, ravens carry memories across generations, and forgotten magic lingers beneath the surface of everyday life.

While there are monsters, battles, and magic, the heart of the series lies in its characters. I’m especially interested in how people change when the beliefs they’ve built their lives upon are challenged. Loyalty, sacrifice, identity, family, and the promises we make—to others and to ourselves—are themes that weave through every book.

The title, Oathbound Kingdoms, reflects that central idea. Oaths shape this world. They create kingdoms, forge alliances, bind families, and sometimes become chains that must be broken. Throughout the series, characters will discover that every promise carries a cost, and that the oldest oaths are often the hardest to escape.

My hope is that readers who enjoy immersive fantasy, richly imagined folklore, interconnected storylines, and character-driven adventures will find a home in these books.

I’m looking forward to sharing more about each kingdom, the creatures that inhabit them, and the characters whose choices will determine the fate of the world. This is only the beginning of the journey, and I can’t wait to invite readers into the world of Oathbound Kingdoms.

People often imagine writing a book as a romantic process. No, it’s not that. It requires more magic, cursing, ten cups of coffee, more coffee, more TV series for inspiration, going out for walks, more staring at blank pages, and reading more.

Most books are written in the middle of ordinary life. They are written between work shifts, family responsibilities, household chores, appointments, and exhaustion. They are written when inspiration is absent, and your deadlines are looming.

The biggest challenge isn’t usually coming up with ideas.

Most writers have more ideas than they could ever write. Much, much more, I tell you… Ideas come in the middle of the night and more the next day.

The challenge is turning those ideas into finished books.

Motivation Doesn’t Last

One of the hardest lessons writers learn is that motivation is unreliable.

Some days, writing feels effortless. The words arrive quickly, scenes unfold naturally, and the story seems to write itself.

Other days, every sentence feels like dragging a heavy cart uphill.

So what helps?

Building habits… write a certain number of words daily or weekly.

Habits create books. Inspiration merely starts them.

The Middle Is a Wilderness

Many writers love beginnings.

The opening chapters are exciting because everything is new. Possibilities seem endless. And then the story or the characters decide to go in an unplanned direction.

The characters become alive, but not in the way you had originally planned.

The ending is rewarding because the finish line is finally visible.

The middle is where many stories struggle.

This is often where abandoned manuscripts are born.

Comparison Is Everywhere

Writers live in an age of constant comparison.

Every day, social media presents bestselling authors, six-figure launches, glowing reviews, and impressive sales numbers.

It is easy to look at someone else’s success and assume they have figured out a secret that you missed.

What readers rarely see are the years of unpublished manuscripts, disappointing launches, rejected queries, abandoned projects, and lessons learned through failure.

Every successful author has a history that is largely invisible.

Balancing Creativity and Business

They are writers, marketers, advertisers, designers, newsletter creators, social media managers, and business owners.

Writing the book is only one part of the job.

For many authors, learning how to market their work feels just as challenging as creating it.

Some days, it may even feel harder.

Yet books cannot reach readers if readers never discover they exist.

Finding the balance between creativity and business is an ongoing challenge for many authors. And now, it’s even more challenging when the social media landscape keeps changing. AI is changing everything.

Dealing With Doubt

Perhaps the most universal challenge of writing is self-doubt.

Writers wonder:

Is this story good enough?

Will anyone read it?

Am I wasting my time?

Should I start over?

Even experienced authors encounter them.

The difference is that experienced writers learn to keep working despite the doubt.

The Reward

Writing is difficult.

It demands patience, persistence, discipline, and resilience.

There are days when progress feels invisible.

There are weeks when the story refuses to cooperate.

There are moments when quitting seems easier than continuing.

Yet there is also something remarkable about creating a world that did not exist before.

A blank page becomes a chapter.

A chapter becomes a manuscript.

A manuscript becomes a book.

And somewhere, a reader opens that book and enters a story that once existed only in the writer’s imagination.

That transformation is what keeps many writers returning to the page.

Writing is never easy, but when the story is finished. It feels great.

There are places in the world where mythology feels real.

In the deserts of ancient Egypt, priests spoke of gates between worlds—hidden thresholds guarded by gods who measured the soul like a weight against truth. In the jungles and high plateaus of Mesoamerica, priests of the Maya and later the Aztec described something eerily similar: layered heavens, underworld rivers, and gods who demanded blood not as cruelty, but as balance.

Separated by oceans they could never cross, these civilizations still told stories that feel like echoes of the same buried idea.

So the question is not whether they were connected.

The question is whether they were both remembering something older than either of them.

The Architecture of the Dead

One of the most striking parallels is how both cultures built death as architecture.

In Egypt, the pyramid was never just a tomb. It was a machine for transition. A way to lift the king’s essence into the circumpolar stars, where death could not reach him. The burial chambers of the Valley of the Kings were mapped with spells from the Book of the Dead, instructions for navigating the afterlife like a labyrinth with rules.

In Mesoamerica, pyramids also served as staircases for the divine. At places like Teotihuacan and later Tenochtitlan, pyramids aligned with celestial cycles, functioning as ritual engines for time itself. The dead were not gone—they were repositioned in a cosmic system that demanded maintenance.

Two worlds. Two architectures. One idea: death is not an end, but a passage that requires engineering.

Gods Who Remember Hunger

Then there is the matter of gods.

Egypt’s pantheon—Osiris, Isis, Anubis—centers on death, resurrection, and judgment. Osiris is dismembered and reassembled, becoming ruler of the underworld. Anubis weighs hearts against truth.

In Mesoamerican belief systems, particularly among the Maya and Aztec, gods like Quetzalcoatl and Mictlantecuhtli govern cycles of death, sacrifice, and rebirth. The underworld is a structured descent through layered trials.

These gods have different names and faces.

But the logic is the same: life must be paid for. Death must be navigated. Nothing returns unchanged.

The Obsession With Hidden Writing

Both civilizations also believed that knowledge could be sealed into objects.

Egypt buried spells inside coffins, pyramids, and papyrus scrolls. Words were mechanisms. To speak a spell correctly was to activate reality.

In Mesoamerica, codices carried astronomical calculations, ritual calendars, and mythic histories encoded into visual language. Stone stelae recorded rulers as if they were part human, part cosmic event.

And in both cases, there is a recurring fear: That language is not just communication. It is containment.

The Artifact Problem

Modern archaeology often treats these similarities as a coincidence—parallel evolution. Human psychology produces similar answers to similar existential questions.

But certain artifacts complicate that certainty.

Alignments across pyramids that mirror star systems with unsettling precision—shared mythic structures involving feathered serpents, underworld rivers, and judgment of the dead. Even the recurring idea of “lost knowledge” is buried beneath sand or jungle, waiting to be reactivated.

It raises an uncomfortable possibility:

What if myth is not invention at all, but translation?

Where This Becomes Something Else

This is where history ends, and the story begins.

Because once you accept the idea that distant civilizations might be echoing a shared, deeper structure of myth, you start to see something interesting and worth writing about.

Building a Multibook Universe in Historical Supernatural Fiction

A great historical supernatural universe doesn’t feel like a set of books. It feels like a place the reader has stumbled into mid-history, where every story is only one fragment of something much larger moving underneath it.

The trick is designing a system of meaning that survives multiple eras, continents, and protagonists without collapsing into chaos.

Here’s how to build one that holds.

1. Start with what is constant in the university

2. Find an artifact, a building, a tomb or a grave, a mystery or a curse.

This constant is your spine.

Everything else bends around it.

You reveal the secrets slowly, book by book.

Every era can have:

• A different “partial truth.”

• A different interpretation of the same phenomenon:

• One civilization calls it a god. Another calls it a curse. Another erases it entirely.

Scotland is a land of mist-covered mountains, lonely glens, ancient castles, and stories that refuse to die.

Long before novels, television, or even printed books, people gathered around peat fires and told tales of creatures that haunted the wilderness. These stories were more than entertainment. They were warnings, explanations, and glimpses into a world where the boundary between the human and the supernatural was dangerously thin.

Many readers know about the Loch Ness Monster, but Scotland’s folklore holds far darker secrets.

The World of the Sìth

In Scottish Gaelic tradition, the supernatural beings known as the Sìth (pronounced “shee”) were not tiny winged fairies. They were powerful, mysterious entities who lived in hidden realms beneath hills and ancient mounds. They could bless a household—or ruin it.

The people of the Highlands treated them with caution and respect. Certain places were avoided after dark. Travelers were careful about what they said in lonely places. A careless wish, according to folklore, might be overheard by something listening in the shadows.

Among all the beings of the fairy world, few were more feared than the Baobhan Sith.

The Beautiful Predator

The Baobhan Sith (pronounced roughly “baa-van shee”) is one of Scotland’s most haunting supernatural figures. Her name is often translated as “fairy woman,” though she is far from the gentle fairy of children’s stories. In Highland folklore, she appears as an extraordinarily beautiful woman dressed in flowing green garments. Her beauty is almost hypnotic.

The Baobhan Sith is often described as a blood-drinking fairy who lures lonely hunters and travelers before feeding upon them. Because of this, modern readers sometimes compare her to a vampire, though in traditional folklore she belongs to the fairy world rather than the undead.

The Famous Hunter’s Tale

One of the best-known stories tells of four hunters sheltering in a remote hut after a long day in the Highlands.

As night fell, they wished for female company. Soon afterward, four beautiful women appeared at the door.

Three of the hunters eagerly danced with the mysterious visitors. The fourth noticed something strange. Blood was dripping onto the floor. Realizing the women were supernatural predators, he fled outside and sought refuge among the horses.

The creatures pursued him but could not reach him. According to folklore, iron protected him. The horses’ iron shoes created a barrier against the fairy beings. When dawn arrived, the Baobhan Sith vanished, leaving the surviving hunter to discover that his companions had been drained of blood.

Why These Stories Matter

Like many old folktales, stories of the Baobhan Sith served several purposes.

They warned against arrogance and reckless behavior. They cautioned travelers about wandering alone at night. They reminded listeners that beauty could conceal danger.

But they also reflected the mystery of the Highlands themselves.

Imagine traveling through miles of wilderness lit only by moonlight. The wind howls across the hills. Mist moves between ancient stones. In such places, it becomes easy to understand why generations believed something supernatural might be watching from the darkness.

Other Creatures of Scottish Folklore

The Baobhan Sith is only one of many legendary beings found in Scottish tales.

The Kelpie haunted rivers and lochs, appearing as a beautiful horse to lure riders to a watery death.

The Bean Nighe, sometimes called the Washer at the Ford, was a ghostly woman seen washing the bloodstained clothing of those destined to die.

The Blue Men of the Minch were sea spirits who challenged sailors with riddles before raising deadly storms.

Each legend reflects a landscape that could be breathtakingly beautiful and terrifyingly dangerous at the same time.

The Enduring Magic of Scottish Legends

What makes Scottish folklore so compelling is that these stories never feel entirely distant.

Walk through a ruined castle on a foggy morning. Wander a lonely Highland path at twilight. Listen to the wind moving through ancient standing stones.

For a moment, the old stories feel possible.

And perhaps that is why legends like the Baobhan Sith continue to survive. They remind us that beneath every beautiful landscape may lie an older, darker tale waiting to be told.

The next time you find yourself wandering through the misty Highlands, keep an eye on the path ahead.

I reimagined the folklore by giving it a folklorist perspective and two sisters... they were the vampiric fairies (Baobhan Siths), along with a woman trying to understand them scientifically, using facts and local disappearances as her basis.

People often think fantasy worlds are only built with castles, dragons, magic, and ancient prophecies.

But some of the darkest fantasy worlds look almost exactly like our own.

That’s something I keep returning to in my books.

Not every monster has claws.

Not every kingdom wears a crown.

Sometimes the fantasy is hidden inside systems so brutal they stop feeling real.

A child passed through foster homes like unwanted luggage.

A teenager learning the rules of survival faster than the rules of school.

A girl who discovers the streets have their own magic: power, fear, loyalty, violence, money, names whispered in the dark.

That’s where the Sugar series begins.

Not in a fairy kingdom.

In a world where survival itself becomes transformation.

Across the three books, Sugar rises from foster homes to the streets, becoming a distributor inside a dangerous underground network. Along the way, she crosses paths with a brilliant teenage mastermind who solves problems other people can’t. That’s why I love writing worlds like this.

Because fantasy doesn’t always need magic to feel unreal.

Sometimes the fantasy is a hidden criminal empire operating beneath ordinary cities.

Sometimes it’s the myth of reinvention.

Sometimes it’s a woman trying to outrun the version of herself the world created.

A lot of my books explore hidden worlds in different ways.

Some are filled with dragon shifters beneath cities.

Some uncover ancient horrors beneath the ocean floor.

Some follow families carrying terrible secrets through generations.

Some open doors into haunted houses and impossible realms.

But all of them ask the same question:

Who do people become when survival demands transformation?

And honestly, those are the stories I never get tired of telling.

I’ve always been more interested in hidden doors… although I like good ghost stories too.

Not literal doors, although those are fun too. I mean the idea that entire worlds could exist beside ours unnoticed. Secret organizations. Ancient ruins buried beneath cities. Governments hiding impossible discoveries. Creatures waiting beneath the ocean floor. Magic hidden behind ordinary apartment walls.

This describes well the Lost Tomb series, which has eight books now.

The older I get, the more I realize nearly every story I write comes back to that single obsession:

What is humanity missing?

That question shaped my Lost Tomb series. I wanted adventure mixed with danger, conspiracy, ancient mysteries, and the feeling that history itself might be lying to us. Those books came from late nights reading about forbidden archaeology, vanished civilizations, unexplained maps, and stories people dismiss too quickly.

Then there’s Sugar.

Sugar walks into a completely different kind of hidden world. Hers is built with her skill to be remarkable in an unremarkable way (Sugar: Vigilante Justice Thriller) and moving from being alone to being part of a secret government organization (Sugar: Black Ops, Sweet Spy Games), which moves from cover operations, espionage, betrayal, traitors, and the dangerous people governments pretend do not exist. She lives in the shadows because she was created there. Writing her felt like stepping into a universe where morality becomes negotiable, and survival depends on staying three steps ahead of everyone else.

The newest Sugar book, Sugar Origin, goes even deeper into how someone becomes a weapon in the first place.

And then there’s Witches and Demons: The House at the Gate.

That story began with a terrifying thought: what if a doorway existed somewhere in the world that should never be opened again? Not because of what might come through it…

…but because something already did…. centuries ago.

Some people inherit jewelry. Alessandra inherited a crumbling house on a demon gate… and a demon in the kitchen.

I love stories where ordinary life cracks open and reveals something ancient underneath. Maybe that’s why I keep returning to horror, thrillers, fantasy, and science fiction. At their core, they all ask the same question:

What waits in the dark once the truth finally shows itself?

Those are the stories I want to tell.

Stories about people forced to confront impossible things. Stories where secrets have consequences. Stories where survival changes people forever.

And honestly, I suspect readers who love these genres are searching for the same feeling I am:

The moment the world stops feeling ordinary.

The reason I’m writing about this is that I’ve just finished Witches and Demons: The House at the Gate, where I have a portal (the gate) to the demon world, and crosspoints to travel between other dimensions.

I have created a world with resistance factions, prison camps, different types of demons, and witches. So that’s what I’ve been doing for weeks now. I started this story back when Vella was still around (the serial fiction platform that ended in 2024), and I have finally finished it. It became longer because of all the world-building and details, like: what would a demon who likes cooking cook in a human world and where he would get the ingredients, or how did the aunts die, and where are they now? or how does the main character find everything, when she was under a memory-loss spell until her grandma died?

About the world-building

Fantasy worldbuilding is one of those creative skills that looks like pure imagination from the outside—like you’re just throwing castles, magic systems, and dragons onto a page and hoping it sticks together.

But if you’ve ever tried to build a world that actually feels alive, you already know the truth:

Worldbuilding is about consistency under pressure. It requires questions: If this were real, what would it cost? Who benefits? Who suffers? And what happens next?

And once you start asking those questions, your world stops being decoration and starts becoming consequence.

Start with a wound, not a map!

And this is exactly what Kate Seger would say, too, and if you don’t know her, she also has a substack Darkling Dispatch)

A lot of writers begin worldbuilding with geography or magic systems. That works, but it often produces worlds that feel like stage sets, beautiful, but emotionally empty.

A stronger starting point is conflict.

Not “there are dragons,” but:

What happens to a society that lives under a dragon or some other threat?

Who profits from that fear?

What rules emerge because of it?

A world becomes compelling when something is wrong in a way that shapes everything else.

Even the most magical settings usually begin with imbalance: political, ecological, spiritual, or emotional.

In my newest book, the wound is the demon gate under the house, a witch who doesn’t know who she is (due to a memory-loss spell), and a demon world where the ruler has not asked the signatories to gather to decide together. A tyranny is not a democracy.

Magic should behave like a system, not a mood

Magic is where many fantasy worlds lose their footing. If it can do anything at any time, then nothing matters.

Good worldbuilding treats magic like physics:

• It has rules

• It has costs

• It has limitations and most importantly, it has consequences

If someone can heal any wound, then what happens to warfare?

If someone can raise the dead, what happens to grief?

If someone can reshape reality, who enforces boundaries?

Every magical ability should quietly ask: What breaks because of this?

Societies evolve around constraints

One of the easiest ways to make a fantasy world feel real is to stop thinking about “cool cultures” and start thinking about adaptation.

Every society is shaped by what it must survive. Find out what that is, and you have something to go on.

Worldbuilding becomes powerful when culture isn’t aesthetic but adaptive behavior over time.

Geography is psychology

Maps aren’t just terrain. They are emotional landscapes for your characters.

A mountain range isn’t just “a barrier.” It is:

• Isolation

• Myth-making

• Delay

• Mystery

Geography shapes pacing, politics, and even personality.

One of the most important questions in fantasy is deceptively simple: Who has power, and who pretends they don’t?

Once you answer that, everything else rearranges itself:

• Laws

• Religion

• Trade

• Education

• Even language

Fantasy worlds become believable when power is visible in the structure of everyday life, not just in kings and wars.

A stable world isn’t one without conflict; it’s one where conflict has rules.

The best worlds feel slightly unfinished

Here’s a secret that surprises a lot of writers: Perfectly explained worlds feel less real.

Real systems are messy. They have contradictions. They have outdated traditions whose origins no one remembers. They have beliefs that persist even when they no longer make logical sense. This is also true in my story: the world has old articles, but they are not in use. They have societal classes, which don’t mean anything anymore because no one asks for the signatories to meet.

So instead of answering every question, leave intentional gaps:

• Why is that law still in place?

• Who originally built that structure?

• Why does that myth persist despite evidence?

Readers don’t need everything explained. They need enough friction to imagine what lies underneath.

Character is where worldbuilding becomes alive

You can design the most intricate system in the world, but it only becomes meaningful when someone has to live inside it.

A farmer in a magical drought world will understand magic differently than a royal scholar.

A soldier will understand prophecy differently than a child.

The same world becomes multiple worlds depending on perspective.

So the real question is not just, “What is your world like?” but: What does it feel like to survive inside it?

That’s where fantasy stops being architecture and becomes “What is your world like?” but “What does it feel like to survive inside it?”s experience.

What Wasn’t Allowed to End

The grain pulsed stronger. The air tightened around it, a subtle compression that made the walls feel closer.

Jack felt it settle behind his eyes. A steady pressure moving through his chest, matching his breath, shaping it. He recognized this. He had felt it once before, in a desert at dawn, when he had held four shards of gold and sunstone and understood — with the same terrible clarity he felt now — that the thing in his hands was alive in a way that had nothing to do with biology.

Across the table, the Burned Man went still. “Don’t.”

“I’m not,” Jack said.

“That wasn’t for you,” the Burned Man said. His voice dragged, strained. “That was for it.”

The gold flickered. A thin line of light crossed the table surface and vanished. Where it passed, the wood’s grain shifted direction, bending, breaking, starting again wrong.

Sarah leaned in. “The surface! Look at it.”

“I see it.”

“It’s waking,” the Burned Man said. His breathing had shortened.

“You said it wasn’t alive,” Jack said.

“I said it wasn’t just gold.” His ruined eye did not move. “Memory doesn’t need a signal.”

Jack stepped closer to the table. The Burned Man watched him.

“You felt it in the bazaar,” he said.

“That explains nothing.”

“It explains you.”

Sarah’s voice sharpened. “Can one of you say what’s happening? In plain language, if possible.”

Jack turned from the table and faced the Burned Man. “You were there. In the desert.”

“You remember,” the Burned Man said.

“I remember the cult,” Sarah said. She set her notebook on the table — not opening it, which for Sarah meant something. “I remember all of it. We watched the collar dissolve. We were standing ten feet away.”

A faint shift crossed the unburned side of the Burned Man’s face. “I remember both of you,” he said.

“Then you know how it ended,” Jack said.

“Yes.” A flash of something — not quite anger. Older than anger. “You called for its unmaking.”

“It had to end.”

“You think that was the end.”

“I watched it come apart.”

“Yes,” the Burned Man said quietly. “You did.” He looked at the grain. “You’re mistaking what you saw for what it meant.”

Sarah shook her head. “It’s gone. We documented the dissolution. I have photographs of the site.”

“Gone,” the Burned Man agreed. “Yes.” He paused. “It’s not finished.”

A ripple moved across the table. The Burned Man flinched back, a sharp breath cutting out of him. His hand jerked away before the light reached him.

Jack noticed. “You can’t touch it.”

“No.”

“But I can.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The Burned Man met his eyes. “Because it knows you.”

“That doesn’t mean anything,” Sarah said.

“It means everything.”

Sarah looked at Jack — that particular look she had developed during the first expedition, equal parts scientific skepticism and reluctant recognition that the evidence was outrunning her frameworks. “Explain. Properly this time.”

The Burned Man took a slow breath. “The Collar didn’t provide power. It enforced order between things that do not follow human rules. Boundaries. Separations. The law that keeps one thing from becoming another. When it was broken — when it dissolved — that order did not vanish.”

The gold lifted from the table. A small distance. A fraction of an inch.

Sarah stepped back. “Did you see that?”

“Yes,” both men said together.

“The order was not allowed to end,” the Burned Man continued. “It existed before the Collar was made. The Collar was only its expression — the form it took when it was forced into physical existence. Destroy the form, and the law it carried does not disappear. It disperses. It looks for another way to exist.”

He looked at Jack. “And you are the only one it has marked.”

Before Jack could respond, Sarah stepped forward. Her chin was set in the way it had been set when she’d first insisted on entering the obelisk chamber ahead of the group — the look that meant she had decided something and the decision was not open for discussion. “I was there too,” she said. Her hand moved toward the grain.

“Sarah—”

She kept going. Her fingers approached the surface. Slowed. Stopped a breath above the gold, suspended — her arm trembling with the effort of pushing against something that had no physical presence but pushed back anyway.

“Something is resisting,” she said carefully. “Not heat. Not force. It simply won’t — allow —” She pushed again. Nothing burned. No shock. Her fingers held, suspended, unable to close the final distance.

She pulled back. The resistance vanished. She stared at her hand.

Jack stepped in and closed his fingers around the grain. The vision struck at once — vast and sudden, the way the desert looks when you crest a ridge and the whole of it opens before you without warning. Sand in every direction. Light tearing through the air. Threads breaking apart, scattering, sinking into the ground without fading. The Collar did not disappear in the vision. It divided. Each piece carrying the same presence. Each piece refusing to end.

Jack staggered and dropped the grain. The room snapped back. Sarah caught his arm.

“What did you see?”

He steadied himself. “It didn’t end,” he said. “In the desert. When Amon-Ra’s fire came down — what I saw wasn’t destruction. It was dispersal. The Collar divided itself rather than cease to exist.”

“Because you gave it the choice,” the Burned Man said. “When you asked Amon-Ra to finish it rather than finishing it yourself — when you placed it on the sand and stepped back — you created the interval. The space in which the law could decide what to do with itself. And it decided to survive.”

Jack absorbed this in silence.

A scream cut through the room. Then another, closer.

Sarah reached the window first. A crowd had formed in the street below, leaving a wide circle of empty space in the center. A man stood alone in it. His arms hung away from his sides, fingers spread. Light clung to his skin. Gold light, running in lines beneath the surface.

The Burned Man spoke under his breath. “No.”

The man looked up at the sky. The sunlight shifted. He smiled — and the smile was wrong in the same way the boy’s smile had been wrong, the smile of someone who is receiving rather than expressing, a face being used as a vessel for something that doesn’t understand human expressions from the inside.

Lines formed along his arms. They opened without breaking the skin. Light moved through them, bright and steady. The crowd scattered. He stepped forward. The ground changed under his feet — the surface losing its shape, reforming as he moved.

Jack felt the pull again. This time it came from outside the room.

“It’s spreading,” the Burned Man said.

“What is he?” Jack said.

“A beginning.”

Jack stepped back from the window. “We need to find where this started.”

“No,” the Burned Man said. “We need to find where it’s going.”

Behind them, the grain shifted on the table. All three of them turned. The gold leaned — pointing toward the street.

The left side of his face was a map of hardened, uneven skin threaded with thin lines of dull gold, as if something molten had fused into him and never fully cooled. One eye was clouded and lifeless. The other watched Jack with sharp, unsettling clarity.

“I felt it,” he said.

His voice carried a rough edge, but there was control beneath it.

Jack stepped aside. “Come in.”

The Burned Man entered slowly, his attention already shifting past Jack, toward the table.

He didn’t acknowledge Sarah. He didn’t look anywhere else.

Only the grain of gold.

He stopped a few feet away from it, his posture tightening. “That shouldn’t exist.”

Jack closed the door behind him. “It does.”

The Burned Man took another step forward, then stopped again, as if something in him refused to get closer.

“It’s not just gold,” he said.

Jack watched him carefully. “No.”

Silence stretched between them for a moment.

Sarah broke it. “Then what is it?”

The Burned Man didn’t answer right away. His gaze remained fixed on the grain, as though it might move if he looked away.

Finally, he said, “A remnant.”

“Of what?” Sarah asked.

He hesitated, then answered in a quieter voice. “Of law.”

The word seemed to settle heavily in the room.

Jack’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Explain.”

The Burned Man shook his head. “Not yet.”

He lifted a hand slightly, gesturing toward the table without touching it. “That is what remains when something bound is broken the wrong way.”

Sarah frowned. “You’re saying this is leftover from the collar?”

“No,” he said, sharper now. “Not leftover.”

He finally looked at her. “It’s what wasn’t allowed to end.”

The implication hung in the air.

Jack turned his attention back to the grain. The faint glow pulsed once, stronger than before.

He felt it again, deep in his chest. Not heat. Not pain. Something closer to recognition.

A distant sound rolled through the city. It wasn’t thunder.

Sarah turned toward the window. “What was that?”

Jack moved to the curtain and pulled it aside.

The sky should have been brighter by now. It wasn’t.

The sun hung low over the horizon, its position wrong for the hour. The light felt stalled, as if time had slowed just enough to be noticeable.

Jack’s voice was quiet. “It’s late.”

The Burned Man stepped beside him and looked out.

“No,” he said after a moment. “It’s delayed.”

Sarah shook her head, almost automatically. “That’s not possible.”

Neither of them answered.

They stood there, watching.

The light shifted, but not forward. It seemed to slide, subtly, unnaturally, as though something was trying to correct it and failing.

The Burned Man’s reflection in the glass looked distorted, the gold in his scars catching the weak sunlight. “This is how it starts,” he said.

Jack didn’t look at him. “No.” He shook his head, adding, “This is how it continues.”

Behind them, on the table, the grain of gold pulsed again, like something that had survived destruction and was now waiting for the rest of the world to fall back into place around it.

THE SUN REMNANT

Year 1969, Cairo

Chapter 1 — The Gold That Shouldn’t Exist

Cairo was too hot for the morning.

Not the ordinary, pressing heat that rose with the sun and settled into bone. This was wrong for this early in the morning.

Jack Stiller stood at the edge of Khan el-Khalili bazaar, unmoving while the city flowed around him in restless currents—voices bargaining, sandals scraping stone, the distant call to prayer bending through the heat.

Everything sounded normal.

Nothing felt normal...

He rolled his sleeve down, thinking about the past weeks.

The Wesekh Collar was gone. Had been gone for weeks. Burned out of existence along with everything else that should have ended that night in the desert.

But something of it remained.

He thought of it first as a memory, but it wasn’t that.

He just felt the collar was only partly destroyed. He recalled how he felt when it was still in his hands.

He had fidgeted with the items on the table next to him. He had not paid attention to what was there.

“Not buying, then don’t touch.”

The vendor’s voice snapped sharp beside him.

Jack turned. A narrow stall, cluttered with trinket bracelets, coins, fragments of imitation antiquity polished for tourists. Nothing worth a second glance.

Except for the small clay bowl in the center.

Filled with gold dust.

Jack frowned. “That’s not—”

“Not for you,” the man cut in quickly. Too quickly. His hand hovered near the bowl, not quite touching it. “You look, you go.”

Jack didn’t move. He stared at the bowl with the gold dust.

The gold shimmered strangely, emitting light rather than reflecting it.

He stepped closer.

The vendor flinched. “Don’t.”

Jack ignored him. He reached out and felt it before contact.

Heat.

Jack stopped just short of touching it. He faced the seller. “Where did you get this?”

The vendor shook his head, already backing away. “Not mine. Never mine. The man came yesterday. Burned, half-dead. Paid with that. Wouldn’t take it back.”

“Burned how?”

The man let out a nervous laugh. “Like the sun tried to eat him and changed its mind.”

Jack inhaled sharply once, then looked around. “Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

A sharp cry cut through the market.

Both men turned.

A child, no older than ten, had slipped between stalls, drawn by the shimmer. Quick hands, curious. He dipped two fingers into the bowl before anyone could stop him.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the boy smiled. Wide. Unnatural.

“I feel it,” he whispered.

The skin on his fingers blistered instantly.

The smell hit a second later: burning flesh, sharp and unmistakable. The boy didn’t scream, and he didn’t pull away his fingers. He kept smiling.

The vendor shouted, knocking the bowl from the table. Gold scattered across the stone floor, grains skittering like sparks.

The boy collapsed. Now he screamed.

Chaos erupted: voices rising, bodies pulling back, someone shouting for water, for help, for anything that made sense.

Jack dropped to one knee beside the child. The burns looked wrong, developing and spreading too fast and deep, and he saw the flesh already glassing at the edges, as if heat had fused it into a glasslike surface.

The boy’s eyes locked onto Jack’s.

And for a second, Jack felt it.

That same strange feeling, as if the gold dust knew him, recognized him.

The boy’s voice trembled, barely a breath. “It chose him first.”

Jack froze. “Who?”

But the boy’s gaze had already changed, unfocused, slipping into shock.

Around them, people stamped at the scattered gold, trying to push it away, but every contact drew hisses of pain. Tiny burns.

No one could touch it without consequence.

No one except… Jack looked down at his own hand.

The feeling he had inside him pulsed more strongly now.

He reached down slowly, ignoring the shouting, the panic, the smell of burned skin and fear.

His fingers closed around a single grain of gold.

Nothing happened. No burn. No heat.

The pulse surged through him, sudden and violent, flooding his chest like a second heartbeat forced into rhythm with his own.

Images flickered behind his eyes: fire, endless desert, and then a figure standing where the sun should be.

Jack sucked in a sharp breath and released the grain. It fell harmlessly into the dust at his feet. The feeling he had didn’t fade. It settled deeper. Like something had just... found him again.

He stood slowly as the market pulled back from him now, fear shifting direction. It was no longer the gold dust. They feared him.

The vendor stared, wide-eyed. He said what everyone else wondered. “You didn’t burn.”

Jack met his gaze. “No,” he said.

Across the bazaar, unnoticed by everyone else, a figure stood at the shadowy edge between two narrow streets. Half of his face was. The other half—charred. Cracked. Wrong. One eye pale and ruined. The other one sharp, stared at Jack, understanding who he was.

Jack felt his stare and turned.

Their gazes met across the chaos.

The man inclined his head slightly. Not greeting. Recognition.

Then he turned and disappeared into the crowd.

Jack’s chest tightened.

He exhaled slowly, already moving towards the hotel.

He recalled the Wesekh collar. It was gone. But the gold, was that dust part of it? That’s why he could touch it, but everyone else burned.

That should have been the end.

But this felt like something they had missed.

Did the gods see this coming, or miss it?

Interestingly, some of the most effective alien horror stories don’t even begin in space.

They begin in the ocean.

Earth’s deep oceans remain one of the least explored places on the planet. Entire ecosystems exist miles below the surface in complete darkness. Creatures live there that look more alien than anything science fiction could invent.

Which raises an unsettling possibility:

What if something from beyond Earth didn’t land on our planet…

What if it was already here?

Another hallmark of alien horror is how different these creatures can be from us.
